Arriving in Vienna & my first week | Vienna Adventures

All the adventures I have been on in my first week living in Vienna.

Surprise! If you didn’t know yet, I moved to Vienna just before my birthday. Two years ago I almost emigrated for a job to Salzburg and for that reason Austria always stuck in my head. I asked myself the question: why not go on your own terms? Find an apartment, rent it and work from there. So I did, I moved to a country I have always been wondering about. To a city that leaves me speechless since it’s filled up with my biggest interests. In a wonderful time of the year when the lights are dancing through the city.

Monday, December 2
The starting day of my travels. I prefer to travel by train, so I knew I had a long day ahead. After over ten hours of travel I made it to my pitstop Nürnberg.

Tuesday, December 3
I explored Nürnberg and was amazed by Bavaria. I’ve alway wanted to see more of this region and in the future I hope to come back to the city and explore a lot of Bavaria as well. Read my blog “Charming Nürnberg & a lovely (vegan) Christmastime” about my time in the South of Germany.

Wednesday, December 4
Let’s move to Vienna! Unfortunately the train that I was supposed to take, a direct train between Nürnberg and Vienna, didn’t exist anymore… So I had to get another train in Linz, not too bad, but I had to stand all the way for two hours in a crowded train. You can probably imagine how tired I was. In the early evening I arrived at my apartment where my landlord welcomed me. After some quick shopping, eating and a shower, I fell asleep before I knew it.

Thursday, December 5
In the evening I already had some amazing plans, so during the day I could play catchup. I did a lot of grocery shopping, getting to know the neighborhood and I also had to work. After an early dinner I made my way by U-bahn to the centre of Vienna. I can’t even begin to explain how happy I am to have waited to see the city centre until it was already dark. The architecture being lit by the Christmas lights was the perfect picture to meet the cultural heart of Vienna.
Under the lights I walked to the Korea Kulturzentrum where I went to Außerordentlicher Abend, a classical concert. It was amazing, I honestly can’t imagine a better start to my stay in Vienna.

Friday, December 6
My Birthday! Unfortunately in the morning I got an eye migraine. Nothing to worry about, well I did have to worry, because it meant I hadn’t eaten enough in the last few days. I forgot that I should fuel my body more when I travel and walk a lot. I took it slow that day. Luckily I did had a lot of inspiration, so I started writing, that kept me busy for the rest of the day.

Saturday, December 7
The day I decided to celebrate my birthday. For a birthday present I went to Mariahilfer Straße, a very popular shopping street. First stop was Runch! Comics + Toys, that place is stuffed with all kinds of comic goods. Especially a good place to be for collectors who might be even on the hunt for some rare items.
It was time for lunch and I grabbed a burger from Swing Kitchen, a vegan junk food place. And let me tell you, that was an amazing burger! I got the Vienna burger, obviously, and it was filled with so many fresh greens and a delicious sauce. Of course I had to visit a bookstore, so I went to Thalia. They have mostly German books, but also a good Englisch section and lots of comics in both languages. At Pandora I got myself a gift, a beautiful charm that represents my past year. For dessert I went to Cinnamood for a cinnamon roll. There are many flavours to choose from, also vegan, and I went for the bueno. So tasty!
I ended the day at the Schloss Schönbrunn Christmas market where I got myself an alcohol free orange punch (mullet wine).

Sunday and Monday, December 8 and 9
Work, work, work. Those days consisted of bad weather. I knew the weather was going to clear up for the rest of the week. So I thought it was best to focus on work for these two days and enjoy the rest of the week exploring Vienna.

Tuesday, December 10
Started my day off at Weltmuseum. This is not a museum I would usually go to, but I got an annual pass for six museums in the city. It is a very good deal, especially since museums are on the pricey side in Vienna. However, I am so happy this was the first museum I went to during this trip. I read about so much history of the country, Vienna and their ties with other cultures. This came in particular handy for the museum I visited the next day (more about that in next week’s blog).
After the museum I got into the more touristy part of town. It was extremely busy due to the Christmas season, but it was still fun to explore the city.

My first week in Vienna and it was a great start to my newest adventure. But there are many more adventures and stories to come. Stay tuned for next week’s blog!

Love,
