Goodbye Vienna (for now) & 20 hours in Düsseldorf | Vienna Adventures

All the adventures I have been on in my fifth week living in Vienna.

Surprise! If you didn’t know yet, I moved to Vienna just before my birthday. Two years ago I almost emigrated for a job to Salzburg and for that reason Austria always stuck in my head. I asked myself the question: why not go on your own terms? Find an apartment, rent it and work from there. So I did, I moved to a country I have always been wondering about. To a city that leaves me speechless since it’s filled up with my biggest interests. In a wonderful time of the year when the lights are dancing through the city.

– If you haven’t seen it yet, read here about my first week in Vienna.
– Or how about when I was clubbing in a museum on a random Tuesdaynight?
– But nothing beats a night at the ballet.
Whenever the party does stop, here are the record stores with some cool beats.

Wednesday and Thursday, January 1 and 2
Happy New Year! These days I was working on multiple personal projects of mine. I have many plans for 2025 and in January I always want to take as much time as possible to work on those projects. This is a month I usually don’t work a lot, because most of my clients do the exact same thing. I did however start those days on a new manuscript for one of the publishers I work for.

Friday, January 3
My last few days in Vienna, but I didn’t have anything big planned. On purpose, I knew it was going to be busy since it was also the last few holidays before the new workweek would start. My plan was to go to the Imperial Treasury (Kaiserliche Schatzkammer). Once I arrived I was welcomed by a long line of visitors. I decided to make an u-turn since it wasn’t a must visit for me personally. But I did want to visit MAJOR BABIES Entertainment, a music store filled with the latest of CD’s and Vinyls. I bought two CD’s here; both from Laufey. This was by far my favourite record store in Vienna. I liked how they mainly focused on the last decade and had a lot of variety.

Saturday, January 4
Today I met up with E for brunch in Little Paris. Yes, did you know Vienna has a Little Paris? It probably wouldn’t surprise you if you already know that the city has a lot of boulangeries. This area of the city is however better known under the name Servitenviertel. E and I planned to go to La Mercerie, but it was incredibly busy and you can’t make a reservation to go there. We ended up at Wolke. Only we were too early to get pizza’s but the brunch over there is amazing too! After a walk in this pretty part of the city we each went on our own way.

Sunday, January 5
Work, clean and start packing. The next day was already planned so I knew that today was the day that I should start packing up. I was honestly heartbroken. I love Vienna, found a routine in the city and love all the cultural activities.

Monday, January 6
At noon I met up with S for pizza at Wolke. Yes, I couldn’t let it go… I really wanted that pizza and homemade lemonade. They have a good selection of vegan pizzas and their whole menu is super original. I couldn’t recommend it more to go here for pizza and brunch! S and I weren’t ready to say goodbye yet. We became quick friends and it honestly feels like we have known eachother forever. We thought it would be fun to go for dessert, so we tried hard to get something, but a lot of things are closed on Three Kings day. After a long walk through Stadtpark (and even did a photo session) we ended up at Gelateria La Romana for ice cream.
In the end we had to say our goodbyes. I wasn’t saying just goodbye to the city, I was saying goodbye to the people I made memories with. The places that made my stay feel like home.
I was packing and cleaning for the next few hours after returning back to my Vienna apartment.

Tuesday, January 7

Here we go, bye Vienna! In the morning I met up with my landlord to hand him the key back to the apartment. I took the bus and S-bahn to the main station where I got some food for my long travelday to Düsseldorf. On my way to Vienna I stayed in Nuremberg, and I liked it a lot there, but I thought it would be best to make the longest travelday one the first day of travel. Also, I had been in Düsseldorf before, so I was good with just a morning and part of the afternoon to walk around in the city.
In the evening I arrived early thanks to a minimal delay. I got into my hotel in Little Tokyo and after dropping my stuff off I made my way to To1980 VEGAN for a lovely hot dinner.

Wednesday, January 8
I woke up early to make the most of my time in Düsseldorf. Thankfully I also had a free voucher for breakfast at the hotel. After ten, when everything else in the city started to open up, I first went to Pandora. There was a German charm that I’ve been meaning to get for quite a while. Luckily they had in store! After I walked into Sephora and Thalia Mayersche. I love the selection they have in this city with lots of comics, English titles and the German fiction I am mostly interested in. For lunch I went to Copenhagen Coffee Lab. With enough energy I made my way to Rune Store. This shop has changed so much since the last time I visited! It got so much bigger with also a big of focus on manga merch. Manga-Mafia Store has now two stores next to each other with both a different focus. At Bookstore Nippon I looked into some Japanese study books. Unfortunately, Takagi was closed. I had hoped to pick up a Japanese magazine there.
I was in the mood for some Korean ice cream. At Hanaro Markt I got my Melona and on the go chopsticks.

After a long morning and part of the afternoon shopping/browsing I got back to the hotel where I made use of the free luggage storage. Onwards to the train station! Around 5 hours of travelling later I got back to my hometown.

My fifth and final week in Vienna and I am still in awe of this adventure. This is the last blog directly about my Vienna adventures, but there are more adventures and stories to come when it comes down to the travel blogs and vlogs.

Love,
