So here we go. AGAIN. I am moving!
The big moving update(s)
At first, I was like… do I really need to update my blog readers about this move? Until I was talking to a few of you recently and found out some of you guys think I still live in Berlin or Vienna! Whoops, it was not my plan to confuse you guys. Trust me, I would post so much more about these cities if I still lived there. Honestly, I think I would take you guys along with me on the whole emigration process.
So let me get this straight, I lived in both cities temporarily. Just as long as it was allowed to not have to deal with major paperwork. Back in January of this year I got back to the Netherlands, but I get that it was confusing, because immediately after I got back from Austria I spent time in Germany, Belgium, England and Germany again. It was an amazing start of the year, I had so much fun. But I have been back in the Netherlands since the start of April with a few day trips to Germany here and there.
Some background information
Six years ago after four years of living on my own (from 19 till 23 years old) I lived on my own in England and multiple parts of the Netherlands, from central to east and north. But here is the thing I was very quiet about during the last six years. Just because what I did is not very common in the north west European culture and I got judged by so many people. My mothers parents were doing very poorly healthwise. My mom took on a caretaker role on top of her fulltime job. I called my mom one day with the preposition: I move back in again, and will take care of the meals, grocery lists, pets, etc. at her house. She immediately took me up on the offer.
Even when I was out of the country, like living in Berlin and Vienna, I had all my moms meals planned and frozen in the freezer. When I was staying in Vienna I had actually made my personal record of meals for her. There were around 30 healthy frozen meals in the freezer ready to be heated up.
Moving on(?)
At the start of 2024 both my grandparents had passed away, it was time to sort out their stuff and housing situation. Once that was all done, my mom and I started talking and I asked: would you want me to move out again? We both got used to the other person and it was nice for the both of us to share our strengths. I cook, she cleans the bathroom. I make the grocery lists, she shops since she is the one with the car. I bake, she gardens. I take care of all the appointments we have regarding the house, from technical stuff to renovations. She does all the other stuff not named.
We are a great team with different kinds of knowledge and we didn’t want to give it up. Or to sum up my moms wise words: if you rent a place somewhere else, you will be paying the equivalent of five times my mortgage. And that’s a lot of money, especially for someone like me who isn’t even in the Netherlands four to six months a year. It’s just money wasted.
Skipping town
Here we are today, we decided to move on together and skip town that holds so many bad memories to the both of us. We talked at great length about where to move to. I would have loved to move back to the east since that is my favourite place in the country. I even have some contacts in the field my mom works in to help her secure a job over there. In the end, my moms current position and the low living costs in the north won.
So we are skipping town and moving to the area I was born in. My mom bought a stunning house we can’t wait to paint and redecorate. By the end of the year we start the moving process, so be on the look out for all the moving and redecorating content coming your way!
As of right now, we are in the process of selling our current house. The next few weeks will probably be busy, but luckily we have been prepping since May. I am not kidding, we had the house ready for sale since June. Got pictures of the house taken, filled out all the paperwork and so much more. We were simply waiting for the right house to come along for us and a few weeks ago it did, we were happy to get picked as the first choice of buying the house.
Are you ready for some moving and redecorating content?
Love,
