The language I already made great progress with!
What is my language goal for this year?
French – Check my skills and get to A2
What do I need the language for?
– Because I already have a basic knowledge of the language and would like to expand it further and then learn Italian via French.
– So I can take care of myself when I am in France or in the French-speaking part of Belgium for work and privately.
Where was I at the beginning of this year?
Last year I got back into my French studies. Picking up some French here and there already came in handy plenty of times. I noticed that my knowledge of the language was better than I expected. If I would be tested I am not sure that I would get A2 level with all the skills, but my reading skills are mostly needed and that is at B1/2 level.
This year I want to look a bit closer at the French language. I need the language a couple of times for travelling both privately and for work. My focus will be conversations that I could have during my travels and getting to A2 level.
What did I do in the first two quarters?
My goals for Q1:
– Start.
– Immersion.
My goals for Q2:
– Keep up.
During Q1 I visited the French speaking part of Belgium. After I came back from living in Vienna earlier this year I immediately restarted my French lessons. Before I knew it I travelled twice to Brussels where I had to speak French and also had to immerse myself. Amazing start off the year if I say so myself!
Where am I now after the first six months?
During the last check in I mentioned French used to be my third language, I spoke it at A2 level with high understanding and reading skills. This was back in 2015 to 2019. A few years ago French unfortunately dropped to be my fifth language after German took its place. But like I also said during the last language update: It is just a matter of time getting back to A2.
Well, as of May I got back to A2 level in French! On a random day I was curious about my skill set. My reading skills are quite good considering I don’t use them a lot. But also I can spot mistakes in grammar. So I was like: why not put it to the test? I got A2 pushing B1. My knowledge is still scattered and honestly there is still so much I don’t know even at A1 or A2 level. But I am happy that I at least roughly know at what level my overall skills are and that I made it back to A2. So yes, I already reached my goal for this year!
How am I going to continue studying the language from now on?
My goals for Q3:
Have fun! I am super happy where I already stand, but I do want to maintain A2 level and keep on working to expand my knowledge. I will do that by mostly working on vocabulary and maybe start doing some more reading exercises towards the end of Q3.
Love,
