What is my language goal for this year?
Korean – Complete level 3
What do I need the language for?
– Because I like the language, so just for fun. There’s no pressure.
– To be able to understand the music right away without having to look at translations.
– Not needing subtitles for K-dramas and shows I follow on YouTube.
– For the future, if I ever have the chance to travel around Korea.
Where was I at the beginning of this year?
Last year was intense on a personal level to say the least. It was hard to maintain my Korean skills. So I decided that I would consume Korean content as much as possible and that studying would come later once my name is changed. During the last quarter of the year when I restarted my Korean lessons again, I made great progress, and even scored very well on tests, so luckily I maintained most of my Korean knowledge. Even better, I found out that I have preferred words that go beyond the textbook stuff, but are still correct Korean. I am super happy that the language stuck with me.
This year I want to focus on getting to and finishing level 3 with Talk To Me in Korean. Right now I am still at beginner level.
What did I do in the first three quarters?
My goals for Q1:
– Increase vocabulary knowledge.
– Practice beginner conversations.
– Review Talk To Me In Korean level 1.
– Start Talk To Me In Korean level 2.
My goals for Q2:
– Review Talk To Me In Korean level 1.
My goals for Q3:
– Finish reviewing Talk To Me In Korean level 1.
– Restart Talk To Me In Korean level 2.
During the summer I had to prioritise my work and also our house project, from buying a new house to selling our current one. I didn’t want to add stress in my daily life so I focused on reviewing level 1 instead of fully moving on to level 2.
Where am I now after the first nine months?
So I got some of the basic stuff down, and I am incredibly happy that I understand more and more when watching a K-drama. Like I said last time: I can even hear when watching a show if the translation is correct or not, or when the nuance doesn’t exist in English.
But because of the hectic life I had with work and all the house stuff, I didn’t start level 2 yet. I have been taking multiple classes, but I am just not where I hoped to be. It’s my plan to not only start level 2 this month but finish it before December, just so I ride the wave of the momentum I am currently having.
How am I going to continue studying the language from now on?
My goals for Q4:
Restart Talk To Me In Korean level 2! I also want to work on my speech and get back to reading more in Korean. When it comes down to reading I have been prioritising German over Korean. Makes sense cause I actually need German for work, but I want to find a way to implement Korean in my day to day life.
Love,
