The ballet, opera and much more… Vienna is filled with music!
Since I can remember I have been an admirer of music. But to be honest it came much later in my life that I had the finances to go to concerts and start buying CD’s on the regular. I love live music and at home I enjoy music the most from my stereo. Nowadays I like to visit music stores whenever I am travelling and when I was temporarily living in Vienna in the winter of 2024-2025 there were a few that stood out to me for various reasons. Let’s discuss!
Alt & Neu Records
Probably the most well known record store of Vienna due to the film Before Sunrise. This movie is very well loved in Asia, especially China, Japan and Korea. Those were also the languages I heard when I went into the very crowded store. When I was standing in line I had a conversation with a Chinese guy and he told me how big the movie is in these countries and stuff related to it. Also the record store apparently blew up on socials over the last few years. Which makes sense for just way more than the movie, they have so much in stock. Though I must say, it consists of older works. I only found a few newer releases, mostly from lesser known artists. Perfect for people who are looking for specific records.
Sissysound Record Store
The perfect store for rock, punk, alternative, pop lovers. There are some shelves filled with funk, electronic and soul. It is a good mix of new and older releases, but mostly from the last decade. The shop is on the smaller side, but very light and the workers are knowledgeable about different genres.
Recordbag Music & Fashion
Looking for a specific record of an indie, alternative, rock record? They might have it. The artists I was looking for were however too niche, even for them, nevertheless I had a fun time in the shop. For collectors it is fun to know they also sell merch, mostly fashion. There are many sections in the store, so take your time exploring.
Rave Up Records
You will find here records from all over the world mostly rock, alternative, jazz, hip-hop and house. I adore how they have part of their shop categorised in countries rather than music genres. It made exploring new sounds so much fun. Walking around in the shop will definitely give you a 90’s vibe.
MAJOR BABIES Entertainment
Last but not least, because this one might be my fave! This music store is filled with the latest CD’s and Vinyls till roughly twenty years back. I bought two CD’s here; both from Laufey. In general I liked how the store mainly focused on the last decade and had a lot of variety in genres. Also the set up of the store is very nice and made it easy for me to walk around for some time and find so many gems of albums. I liked that they also had some Japanese albums and from a lot of artists they have their back catalogue as well which is unfortunately quite rare for many shops.
