Aka my life with books!
For almost half my life I have been a Manuscriptreader for multiple publishing houses, but only for one I have been working for for over a decade. And I thought it would be fun to share which books will be published in Dutch this upcoming spring that I had a hand in.
Just so you get the full picture, I read both English and German manuscripts. Depending on the country where the works will be published first, I read different genres. Yes, that means I have specialties and that honestly makes my work a bit easier. Although I now have so many specialties since I also have taken on German manuscripts. Anyway, these are the genres I read depending on the country:
United Kingdom – Feelgood, Romance, Cosy Romantasy
United States – New Adult, Romance, Romantasy, Fantasy, Young Adult
Australia – Comedy, Romance
Germany – New Adult, Romance, Romantasy, Fantasy
Austria – New Adult, Romance
So even though I am Dutch, it’s actually rare for me to read in my own language. I am keeping up with my work reads, and I also read works that help me to stay on the latest trends for work and I read privately. However, those books are super different from my work, so I truly feel like I have some downtime.
Nevertheless I would like to share some books that are currently being translated and will be published this spring in Dutch. I am sooo incredibly proud I am representing these books since these stories have my heart.
The Midnight Village – Holly Martin
Star Brightheart bakes cakes that can help a person nail a job interview or mend a broken heart. But when a celebrity food critic nearly bites the dust after eating one of her cakes, she needs to disappear from her flashy public life in London. Fast.
She escapes to the one place where no one will find her; the secretive and exclusive village of Midnight.
But what she finds is a village full of witches, a thirty year old curse, a talking cat and a whole world of magic she never knew existed. Yet she feels like she belongs there, something Star has always struggled to feel anywhere else. And it’s not just because of the gorgeous young Mayor Wolf Oakwood who convinces her to stay, or the delightfully meddling resident witches that give her a welcome. There’s more that draws Star to Midnight. Something that goes beyond chance. It’s a discovery that will flip her world – and her heart – upside down once the truth comes to light.
Or soon better known as “Thuis in Midnight” will be published on February 12. Holly Martin has been an author I have been rooting for for a long time. The first book that got translated at the publishing house, “The Gift of Happiness”, will probably forever be one of my faves of the author.
The Lemon Tree Hotel – Rosanna Ley
In the beautiful village of Vernazza, the Mazzone family have transformed an old convent overlooking the glamorous Italian Riviera into the elegant Lemon Tree Hotel. For Chiara, her daughter Elene and her granddaughter Isabella, the running of their hotel is the driving force in their lives. One day, two unexpected guests check in. The first, Dante, is a face from Chiara’s past, but what exactly happened between them all those years ago, Elene wonders. Meanwhile, Isabella is preoccupied with the second guest, a mysterious young man who seems to know a lot about the history of the old convent and the people who live there. Beneath the summer sun, Isabella is determined to find out his true intentions and discover the secret past of the Lemon Tree Hotel.
Or soon better known as “Het Lemon Tree Hotel” will be published on April 21. Rosanna Ley has a way with words that makes you transport to a certain place. And afterwards, once the book is closed, you want to travel to it for real.
Morbidly Yours – Ivy Fairbanks
Callum Flannelly would rather dive into an open grave than take a stranger to dinner and a movie. But he can only inherit the family undertaking business and carry on their legacy under one condition: He must marry before his 35th birthday. So it’s out of the mortuary and into the dating scene.
Lark Thompson would rather get crushed by a falling anvil than stay next to a funeral home during her stay in Galway, Ireland. The vivacious American cartoon creator and animator came here to embrace life, not be reminded of losing her husband.
When Lark learns of Callum’s dilemma and aversion to marrying out of necessity rather than love, she agrees to help the introverted mortician. Although sworn off love herself, she is optimistic that Callum can find The One and secure his inheritance.
But as the dating project progresses and their friendship grows, so does a mutual attraction. The more time she spends with serious, sarcastic Callum, the more she dreads finding him a match. And the more disastrous dates he endures, the more he dreads Lark’s imminent return to the states.
If they think it’s possible to ignore their connection, they’re dead wrong.
Or soon better known as “Tot het einde” will be published on April 26. This was one of those manuscripts me and the Acquiring Editor couldn’t let go of. We both wanted to publish it so bad, but sometimes it just takes time and the right moment. Since this story got a second book in the series, now is the right time.
I hope you liked this blog and gave you some insights of my work as Manuscriptreader. And who knows, maybe you got some inspiration for your own TBR!
Love,
