This month’s TBR consists of some fantasy, German new adult and also my fave manga!

Fantasy

A Sorceress Comes to Call – T. Kingfisher
Cordelia knows her mother is unusual. Their house doesn’t have any doors between rooms, and her mother doesn’t allow Cordelia to have a single friend—unless you count Falada, her mother’s beautiful white horse. The only time Cordelia feels truly free is on her daily rides with him. But more than simple eccentricity sets her mother apart. Other mothers don’t force their daughters to be silent and motionless for hours, sometimes days, on end. Other mothers aren’t sorcerers.

After a suspicious death in their small town, Cordelia’s mother insists they leave in the middle of the night, riding away on Falada’s sturdy back, leaving behind all Cordelia has ever known. They arrive at the remote country manor of a wealthy older man, the Squire, and his unwed sister, Hester. Cordelia’s mother intends to lure the Squire into marriage, and Cordelia knows this can only be bad news for the bumbling gentleman and his kind, intelligent sister.

Hester sees the way Cordelia shrinks away from her mother, how the young girl sits eerily still at dinner every night. Hester knows that to save her brother from bewitchment and to rescue the terrified Cordelia, she will have to face down a wicked witch of the worst kind.

A dark retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s Goose Girl, rife with secrets, murder, and forbidden magic. Do I need to say more?

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries – Heather Fawcett
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party–or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, and the Fair Folk.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones–the most elusive of all faeries–lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all–her own heart.

I had plans for this book to read in October, however I saw that the Dutch translation would come out at the start of November and I haven’t read a book in my native language in a long time. I think it would be wise for me to keep up my readings in Dutch as well, especially since I am learning so many languages, I still want to keep up with my first language for the time being.

New Adult – German

Save You (Maxton Hall #2) – Mona Kasten

Yes, let’s go! I loved the show and the first book in the series. Reading the second book will probably be a bit harder, since I watched the show before I read the first book. My German is getting better, but I do need some help here and there. Nevertheless I can’t help my excitement, cause the cliffhanger of the last book was a lot and I need to know how the story will continue.

German critics rave about this story and that is how I found out about the existence of this book. When I went to purchase the book during a day trip to Germany, the owner of the bookstore immediately walked up to me to tell me about the book and how enthusiastic she is about the story. Then it must be good, right?
I had hoped to read this book over the summer, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to, so I will give it another shot this month.

Manga

The Apothecary Diaries Manga, Vol. 6 – Nekokurage (Artist), Natsu Hyuuga (Original Story), Itsuki Nanao (Composition), Touco Shino (Character Design)
When the ever luminous Jinshi asks for her help in disguising himself to see to a matter beyond the palace walls, Maomao must dig deep to mar her employer’s divine allure! And to make the ploy believable, Maomao herself is roped into a spot of theater right alongside her master.
But the “business” at hand takes the pair right to the gates of the Pleasure District, leaving Maomao to wonder if all her hard work has been for a mere assignation or if there’s yet another mystery afoot…

I absolutely adore the anime, but since it will take a bit more time before the second season comes out (January 2025), I hope to read as many volumes as I possibly can in the upcoming months.

Which book do you hope to read this month?

Love,
